Hi and hope your all well
The last few weeks I've received some worrying news about my dad.
He's elderly and has been diagnosed with bowel cancer.
Given his age I'm quite concerned about him for obvious reasons.
When I go through worrying and stressful times I often go through spells of just getting outside to loose my self for a couple of hours a day exercising.
It seems to help a little in getting my head together.
I've got to ashamably admit my cycling has somewhat gone off the boil in recent times.
I've put on a little bit of weight but I'm not bad for the aging old f@rt I am .
So the last few weeks gone ,I've decided to going out on long brisk walks.
My knees and joints don't seem to thank me anymore to using the bike.
Cycling a 25 mile round trip, I really pay for it for the next couple of days and I somehow don't look forward to getting out to doing the next ride out again.
So back to this walking milarky I thought I would give it a try.
In all the years gone by I've never rated or enjoyed going for long walks.I've either found them boring and uneventful ,but this week gone I've actually enjoyed it.
Sporting a nice pair of Merrell walking shoes,a cheap pair of B&M ear buds connected to my favourite tunes on Spotify I've walked over 35 miles (just going out each evening doing 5 miles)
On top of that there's the other general miles you put in through just day to day walking.
After each walk my legs feel tired and achy but in a nice way instead of hurting achy that I often get from cycling.
My back/knees , neck and wrists also feel great too after a long walk which cannot be said for when I cycle.
Another thing that I'm enjoying about walking as that I don't feel as vulnerable.
I'm on the pavement as opposed to the road where I'm constantly having to keep an eye out for the traffic.
I don't have to contend with the dreaded punctures or a change into my cycling gear.
It's just a pair of shorts/t shirt and my walking boots and then head off up into the hills of Wales.
Come winter when it gets dark after work I'm thinking walking will be a much safer option to do.
I've always hated cycling on cold dark evenings along busy roads.
I know and appreciate this is a cycling forum and will most probably get some stick about my long rambling post, because I understand that cycling has/been a great thing for me over the years.
I'm quietly hoping my long to me walks each day will help me lose some weight over the coming weeks months (what do you think).
It usually takes about an 2 hours to walk 5 miles (ish)
Either way it's getting me out the house after work instead of stewing over things I can't change.
All the very best,
Johnny.
