Actually a very difficult series of tests. A part 1 written exam where high marks are required as well as certain marks on each section (ie you can't do badly on one section and pass by doing really well on all the other sections achieving the required overall pass mark) A long drivng test in all road conditions that from memory is 60 or 90 minutes long and a part three that tests teaching ability that is also, take it from me, very difficult. On top of that fail any of the parts three times and thats your lot and you have to start again. The driving test is the hardest I have ever done out of the ROSPA/IAM and taxi drivng tests

So how come driving instructors make such crap drivers?

(I don't include race or rally instructors btw)

How come cyclists make such bad road users?

I think the word we are both missing is "some".

That said, my own driving instructor, though guiding me successfully to a 1st time pass, scared the bejasus out of me. Later in my course, couple of weeks before my test, I was signalling to turn left to a street just ahead of a bus stop. As I slowed, indicating left, and was level with the cab, the bus just set off without indication (assume he didn't see the need as he was in a bus lane). I had the situation all under control and was slowing gently to try to time my turn with the back of the bus moving ahead, when suddenly my instructor reached over and pounded the horn, braked with the dual controls and turned the air blue out of his window. Result = both bus and car stopped, blocking the road.

I gathered that I shouldn't follow his example should a similar situation arise on my test.

All that said, that's one instructor perhaps on a bad day, I wouldn't fancy the job. I've guided people through awkward situations before and been told that I should take instruction up as a career but I really couldn't do it...I know it would be harder than it looks. I don't even like being a passenger.

Playing with his iPhone when he overtook me..
I am very tempted to report him to his school.

Don't bother with the driving school, ask at the nearest test centre for the name of the Supervising Examiner and send the details to him/her, they will sort it out. If the instructors can't drive safely what hope is there for those they teach?
