I wouldn't have worried....As soon as I hear the siren I try and get out of the way.Oh yeah I would expect that.Sorry.

Looks to me like he was just pulling over for the siren.

I have one from yesterday where I get well out of the way (up the pavement and stop)...This was after catching up with a Pre Booked (Braincell) for the third time after the cock passed close at speed.

I may put it up if you are interested.

Cheers for the input everyone.

There was a space behind where he could have comfortably fitted. That's what got me annoyed

So the driver was just being a c0ck and not paying sufficient attention? Now there's a surprise....

Looking at the vid seems he was paying a little more attention tham the OP, at least he reacted to the sound of the Police Siren! May have been a member of your family the Police were trying to get to, the main thing was to clear the way not use it a an excuse to put a pointless video on Youtube

Lol. Little point in turning around. I wouldn't have seen the police car due to the van being behind me' till he overtook. And with the tall buildings. The sound bounces off all the Walls and you have no way of telling where it is or if is even coming in my direction.
I don't see how looking around (whilst the van was blocking my view) would have helped. I'd rather concentrate on the road ahead and brake and avoid any idiot that turns in on me.

Don't get me wrong, I will look for where the siren is and pull to the aide of the road or requires. But looking wouldn't have helped.

I think the chances of Bruce being as alert or switched on in traffic as gaz is remarkably small. "Reacting" to a police siren by swerving into the next lane and almost squishing a cyclist is good alertness in Bruce's books. Dear oh dear...

Don't read much into the incident. You have sirens and watch 20 cars there's vast variation in how they react and how quickly. Others frequently misread what others are doing in those situations. As long as sirens were on and everyone got on safely then that's all that matters.

I agree with the point about you panic when you hear a siren - My dad had a fire truck bearing down on him and moved over to the left to let him past.... and got his car scratched by a skip with a plank of wood with a nail sticking out of it..(we couldn't see the plank as it was night time, and were both panicing a bit about the speed at which the truck was travelling!!).

(I say scratched - It actually took a 3 foot long, 2 inch wide hole in the body work - covered up with trusty GAFFER TAPE!!!!)

I've taken another look at the video and the van was in the right hand lane from 6 seconds in, so he wasn't overtaking you (or at least not at this point, he may have done so earlier). The road is 2 lanes of traffic in each direction and he was quite legitimately in that lane, along with other vehicles. On hearing the siren indicating that the police were on the way, those in the right lane would have to move over to let them through. Now he was parallel to you as you crossed the box junction (where of course you can't really stop) so on the other side he'd have to move over. His manoeuvre certainly wasn't the best, maybe he could have pulled in behind you but as there's no rear footage then we can't see what space there is. Maybe you could have slowed some more across the box junction to give some more room between you and the lorry in front so the van could pull in.

So I'd still say it's 50/50.

Before the box junction it's a 4 lane road. 2 lanes go of to the right.
i've attached an image from the rear view whilst i'm on the box junction, which shows the van, the police car, and the space behind me, which only got bigger.

As gaz said...It's difficult with sirens with working out where they are coming from.

Your comments like your user name are purile and pathetic, in essence you add nothing of value to the discussion, any comments you make are clouded by your hero worship of the OP, perhaps thats where the "bent" comes in.

I like your vids gaz, I subscribe to your channel, but there are some of them, like this one, which are really pointless.

This guy doesn't cut you up, he leaves you a perfectly decent amount of space, and to top it all off, there's a police car coming, so everyone should get to the left ASAP, including you.

IMO, putting up videos of non-events like this damages the good work you do by posting videos of really bad incidents. This is not an incident, and nor is crap footage of people using phones in cars or creeping into the ASL or whatever.

Exactly - some of your videos are great, and people who are new to cycling can learn a lot from them, but with some of them I just dont know why you even bother.

Sitting at red lights for 37 seconds...really?? :yawn

However I would agree with Bruce, I don't think that the van nearly squished the OP at all. I think that it was aware that Gaz was there and moved over enough for the blue light to get past whilst still allowing Gaz enough room for the couple of seconds involved. Bit of a non event really and I think BM that your comments above were uncalled for .
