On my way to our meeting point,i ride down a one way street. This morning coming towards me is an old lady on a mobility scooter.Smack bang in the middle of the road.So as forceful but with respect i informed her it was one way and she was going the wrong way,she replied she knew she was,and that was it.
I just thought how stupid she was,but then i noticed a couple of yellow plastic fences further up the road where the Gas people had been digging up the road and path.Should i have kept my thoughts to myself. It was early and maybe she might not have been in danger.

She might have been splattered by a van coming the other way. How would you have felt if you had said nothing ?
It's a good deed anyway.

Worth telling her. Plenty of people driving those things seem to have no idea about the roads, or indeed, common sense or courtesy! Even if she'd had to take to the road to avoid the pavement works, there's no need to be right in the middle....

On our Thursday round, we often see an old chap on one, he tears about (well, up to 8mph) wherever he fancies, no patience, never gives way if he can help it. He made a van driver reverse all the way down a narrow side street with parked cars either side, when he could have held back a few metres at the corner, let the van through and then carried on unhindered. Still, at least he's not driving a car around!

I know they transform a lot of people's lives, get them out and about and so on, but I'm afraid too many users simply don't have, or assume they don't need, any road sense.

Quite apart from road sense issues, I worry about the stability of some of them. I know they have the batteries low down, so that helps the centre of gravity, but sometimes they look very tottery going up kerbs. I had to stop and help a chap once who had tackled a drop kerb at the wrong angle, and been thrown out of the seat. Fortunately, he was ok, if a little bruised.

Let's show a little more consideration and respect for folk who are no longer as physically fit as the majority of Cyclechatters. The danger on our roads comes from the speed at which motor vehicles are driven in this country, albeit a legally approved speed.

Consideration works both ways. Plenty of scooter users are fine, but the odd few show no regard for anyone else's safety, and quite often seem to have less than perfect awareness of their surroundings. Those things are heavy, and I really don't want one running into my legs on the pavement!

We had a Forum ride out of Leeds last year ( or was it the year before?) Where a chap on a scooter managed to conk out halfway across a junction. We got him to the side of the road and back on the path and whatever it was that had stopped the thing working suddenly sorted itself out and he took fast, and unexpectedly. He went round the corner on the path almost on two wheels. I'm not sure who was more in control him or the scooter.

Some of them are a mare. My in-laws have two, a very light weight one that doesn't go in a car, and one that will collapse. These cheaper ones are very unstable. That said me and my son double tested the disabled ramp we built for our in-laws last year at their caravan. Had great fun trying to crash two up on a scooter....

Tests worked, no crashes. LOL.
