Was there a really good movie made last year?

Just finished watching Arrival. Meaning I've now seen a third of the nominees for Best Picture, including Moonlight - the winner - and La La Land - the supposed front-runner before Awards Night. Of the three, La La Land was far & away the best, and it really wasn't anything special. Not a patch on any number of movies from the past. Moonlight was ok, but far from great, and I suspect will be pretty much forgotten within a few years, and Arrival was risible: all style, no substance whatsoever.

Here's a full list of the Best Picture finalists:

Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

Was any of them a really good movie? One that will still be regarded as such in, say, 20 years?

Hidden Figures. True(ish) story, uplifting, has you rooting for the main characters, and neatly avoids all the cliches and race struggle potholes that many other films stumble into. A real feel good film, and you learn stuff.

Arrival is good but no better than Gravity Prometheus etc. Unlikely to be an Alien or Close Encounters only time will tell..could have been a classic if they hadnt buggered it up?

Hell or High Water blows them all away. Brilliant performance from Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine proves he can act and do so very well at that with a really atypical character for him. Great script, well paced with some good twists.

Seriously fellers, get yo' ass into gear and watch it. Those who've seen it will most assuredly speak well of it in 20 years.

Arrival made me want to eat my own stomach to escape the dirge. The only relief was Emma wotsername, who is rather scrummy. Even Forest Whittaker was there just for the paycheque.

You can't have a great movie every year and last year was no exception.

There were some horrendously overhyped movies, such as La La Land and Moonlight, which have probably already been forgotten, but there were some good movies, too,
Un Baccio,
Frantz,
A Bigger Splash
Walking Distance
Belgica
Room
Hail, Caesar!
An
The Assassin

And there were some very good movies,
Paterson
Poesía sin Fin
Manchester by the Sea

Not a vintage year but not a bad crop on the whole.

We're discussing steak dinners at a five star restaurant and old threemoans recommends us a McDonalds! ;)

It's all subjective mongo old spud, your five star rez is probably an over priced, over rated, health hazard with a French chef from Swindon and in reality is one up from a kebab van at best, my MacDonalds is best flushed straight down the khazi to cut out the middle man but it offers a moments pleasure to those foolish enough to participate.

I've not seen any of the Best Picture nominations but my wife saw Manchester By The Sea and loved it.

My favourite film of last year was either Sing Street or Love & Friendship. Both of which I have now seen twice. Also very much enjoyed High Rise and Hail Caesar. Arrival appeals to me too.

I don't generally pay much attention to the Oscars and certainly don't use them as a guide to what's actually worth watching. To anyone who does, I have just three words for you: Driving Miss Daisy
