Seriously dont think anyone can blame cycling apps or sat navs - motorways are clearly signed.

I'm guessing the rider wasnt looking properly, and that the media want to project more negativity towards cycling. As Davefb infers... there is less attention when a driver does something stupid. Yesterday 2 stories emerged about wrong-way motorway drivers.

Bet you all missed those.

Could it possibly have been @SatNavSaysStraightOn?

well there is this nice wide lane totally empty that runs along most (but not all) motorways and the gradient is always nice and kind , but sadly in this country 'this lane' don't always last very long and strangely motorists can't cope with the concept...

And nope - I didn't tell him to go 'straight on'....

(for those not in the know, I have cycled on motorways when on tour in eastern Europe, out of necessity at times - like entering a former soviet country legally )... but also the hard shoulders are not very clean in this country either... and I was on my own epic (for me) bike ride yesterday closer to the M6 than the M25.

driving home a few weeks back (m60 near trafford centre) , I did get the motorway sign "SLOW DOWN WRONG WAY DRIVER".. tell you what, I slowed for that one!

nothing appeared.... ( phew!) and no headlines...

I was discussing this with a lorry driver at work today, and asked the question what is so different to riding along the motorway compared with cycling on the A326 (I do sometimes use it if I'm running late). Some of the A326 is NSL, so 60mph, single carriageway, so you're dependent on the traffic seeing you and giving you room (to date they normally do), and a lot of the traffic is 44 ton HGVs (these do tend to be the best drivers). Whereas on a motorway most of the time there is a clear lane on the left not being used, the speed limit is only 10mph more but if there is a lorry there it will be doing at most 56mph (unless it's Irish), all the traffic (should) is going in the same direction.

Using this theory a motorway actually looks safer. I must point out that I don't feel the need to rush out and try it though.
