On the subject of washing cycling clothes, and particularly good stain remover to chuck in the wash as the roads are pretty grubby right now and good splash of oily muck on some of my coats ..

This is something I’m a bit obsessive over. I only worry about it on my winter jacket as my warm weather stuff doesn’t get spotted.

ASAP after the ride I get a Vanish stick and use this to remove any spots. Soak the area first, rub with stick and then using two hands rub the material against itself. Rinse well immediately after cleaning, washing machine on a delicate cycle and the jobs done.

I always use non Bio powder, delicate cycle and drip dry all kit. Works for me

Leave it in a bucket of bleach mixed with water over night. (If that doesn't work, add more bleach and repeat.)

all my kit and the lad's football kit (plus any other lycra-like clothes) gets washed at 30 degrees in non-bio…

40 degree synthetic wash every other day seems to do the job for me. I've never had any issues with stain removal but my once bright yellow Planet X commuter LS is now a dull grey but I'd put that more down to the quality of the original dye and the garment itself.

Nothing looks worse than faded cycle clothing. I know lots will ridicule this but for me, after 21 years as a scruffy dirty mountain biker wearing repaired, worn out clothes, one of the attractions of road cycling is the smart, clean kit.

Should this thread be merged with the Tips To Make Yourself More Visible one?
Coz the OP has cracked it.

Yes, dying this a dark colour is the sensible approach. You'll not get the red out of brilliant white without the use of nasty bleaching agents which would also weaken the fabric. That said, there appears to be some plastic coating by the shoulders, also the zip and lining around the hems etc wouldn't take dark dye very well, so it will be unsightly, but still usable. Seen as though dye is so expensive, I wouldn't buy it to do this specifically, but I might stick it in with an old pair of jeans if I happened to be doing them anyway.

That's annoying!!

I am now banning myself from purchasing white socks - they either turn 'off white' after a few washes (depsite being washed with whites) or the soles just get filthy, even when wearing on carpeted floor at work (surely not that dirty!!)

Clearly there is no magic whitening gun for my pink race cape. I don't actually wear it that often, and it's not actually an unpleasant colour, just an, ahem, rather gendered one. I think I shall continue to use it as it now is. If it attracts any unusual attention, I will report back here.
