@Gwylan those rubber phone holders are brilliant, damp out a lot of vibration. I use them on my mtb over very rough terrain & jumps without any problems. The downside of ziplock bags is that they don't fit around the phone/mount interface very well. The "sunslice" one I posted above has a rear central drawstring closure design, I've not found anything else similar.
OR you have to completely envelop the phone and then place it in the holder.

True.
Occurs to me that wrapping with cling film might be a solution
Not elegant, but it works

How did you all manage before GPS? I never got lost looking up a route on a map. I may have "explored alternative routes" but never got lost. ^_^

Re voice directions - I don't do this myself but a friend I ride with sometimes is a fan of voice directions from Google maps on the phone, especially for "tactical" navigation where we are going off a pre planned route in the GPS. It works pretty well.

Frequent map stops. A lot of faffing. Never got (very) lost as far as I remember. To me GPS is a "nice to have" that is so nice that it is pretty much indispensable.

Like this, the same way I managed after GPS:

use voice nabigations with my phone in a dry pocket.

That's what I've been doing, but not as good as being able to see the map on off-road mtb, plus I have caught komoot saying left instead of right (and vice versa) on more than one occasion:banghead:

looks the wrong scale for navigating unless your going by motorway!
It's 1 inch to 4 mile, which is exactly the right scale, it shows all the minor roads, and covers an area of 18 miles by 22 miles, which is enough to keep going for an hour or two without changing. Anything larger scale is useless, because you need too big a map to prevent keep running off the edge of it every few minutes.
