I am going to buy some new MTB shoes that i want to be wayerproof. The problem is as much as they bang on about gortex this and neoprene that, i always get wet feet from water coming in through the cleat when riding through a puddle. Is there a shoe out there that has protection from this? Are these waterproof shoes actually waterproof?

Looking at the Shimano ones for a ton.

You can buy waterproof overshoes for your standard shoe. They are Neopryne and should work well. Here are a few on the bay.

I have had Shimano winter boots in the past and currently have the Specialized equivalent - both are said to be waterproof and indeed they are if you can avoid the water seeping down your leg into the top of the boot. If I really really want dry feet, I use neoprene overshoes over the waterproof boots and make sure my tights go over both as the main culprit for water seepage is longs/tights getting wet (especially with spray from the front wheel if you don't used mudguards) and conducting this water into the top of the boot cuff where it meets socks - and away it goes all the way down to your toes

Another option is the sleeve of a rubber glove..... use it as a sleeve to direct water around the boot top.

It does make me laugh though.

I use Keen Commuter sandals during the Spring / Summer / Early Autumn:

The yellow writing on the label states they are Waterproof!

The material may be, but the design certainly isn't

does water seep through the sole where the cleat is? It does on my current pair of specialised.

Nice sandles by the way. Would look good with a white pair of sealskins socks.

SealSkinz waterproof socks work.....after a fashion. Water drips down your legs and enters the socks from above, at the ankles. Your feet stay wet for the duration and never dry out. Something like wearing a wet-suit really......

It helps if you can fill up the slots below the cleat with silicone bathroom sealer to stop the water coming in that way. Then just wear Sealskinz waterproof socks to keep your feet dry in wet shoes or the Shimano or Northwave winter boots are pretty waterproof otherwise but not really for summer wear.

Pleeeeease!

Black or grey woolen socks surely?

Back on topic.... It depends on the sole. Some have the retainer for the cleat on the inside of the sole itself and these will leak, others have a recess within the sole, and these do not leak

+1 for Sealskinz - I wore a pair inside my porous trainers for a wet ride-in before the start of the Dunwich Dynamo last week - everything else was soaked but my feet stayed dry and toasty!

+2 for sealskinz. I bought a pair of their 'sockettes' before I went to France a week or so ago. Glad I did since the first two days it rained continually and my feet stayed nice and dry without being all sweaty.

Sealskinz, when they are new, are sort of water proof. In the sense that if you stood in a bathtub in 1" of water your feet would remain dry

But in the real world socks have a hole in the top for your feet to go in. Rain will also go in this hole and your socks will fill with water as they are an ideal place to collect it.

Overshoes are great but have a similar "hole in the top" problem

If it is cold and wet then full length water proof trousers can be worn, covering the hole in the top of foot wear

If it is warm and wet then shoes with mesh that drain well are good
