Does anyone have, or have experience of a Watt Bike.
Is it an improvement on a regular trainer (say Kurt Kinetic) with your bike on?
It is an expensive item but we have long cold winters here and it is just a thought
and I imagine it is equally boring

Whether it's an improvement or not depends on what you want to achieve, what data you want from it, how you interpret it, and then what you do about it as a result.

Do you have any experience of a Watt Bike Citius?
As I said, there are long periods when I can't go out at all and I would like to
continue cycling in some way that resembles the real thing so that it doesn't
feel like starting over every spring. The data would hopefully convince me that
the effort was worthwhile.

I regularly use a watt bike at the gym, I tend to use it only for tests like FTP as it bores the socks off me. I use a Tacx Turbo Trainer at home, although not the same as real riding I like using it with real life videos of famous rides around the world. Sometimes for a simply recovery ride I just watch a normal film. Try as I might, I can never get the Watt Bike set up like my road bike.

Thanks Milky you confirmed one of my concerns (maybe two) I use a real bike on my trainer but it is still boring from what you say I get to keep the boredom but lose the real bike feel, amirite?

A powermeter and a regular turbo rigged up to something like Zwift or trainer road would be cheaper these days - and just as effective, tbh. As mentioned, the Wattbike is effectively an elaborate exercise bike. Plenty of adjustment, but still an exercise bike.

I used one at the gym a few times when I was off the bike with a broken hand. It was a bit more interesting than a basic turbo trainer but I still needed some podcasts to keep me interested enough to keep going for 30 minutes. I would've used a turbo but I live in a flat with very bad sound insulation.
