..............to act as staff to a stray.

As I rode into the driveway after work yesterday I saw what appeared to be milk spilt on the drive. I asked the kids what it was, and Cubette told me she had given a cat a drink as it had been meowing pitifully. Cubester had managed to tread on the saucer which is why it was spilt.

An hour later I was drying the bike off when Cubette shouted that the cat was back. I looked up and saw a black cat with a very bushy tail, who strode past me, and into the house. I picked it up and found it was very skinny, with an empty belly. It had a lovely coat, and clear marks round its neck where a collar had been.

It was absolutely starving, and wolfed down a plate of Buster's dog food. It then promptly curled up on top of Cubette's swimming bag and went to sleep.

We live in a hilltop village, and tend to know all the local pets etc, and this is a stranger. Our village isn't exactly the sort of place a cat would find its way to, and the lost collar makes me wonder whether it hasn't been abandoned. There's also a chance it has hitched a lift in a delivery truck or something.

Mrs Cube is not a cat lover, but softened visibly when the kids started the old pester routine. The cat spent the night in a box in the kitchen, and was put out in the morning. It returned (not surprisingly) at teatime, and promptly walked in, had a short hissing session at a bemused terrier and asked to be fed. As I type it is curled up on Cubester's bed.

We've printed off some notices for local shops, and will take it to the vet to see if it's chipped tomorrow. In the meantime, meet "Jeeves"

Keep him, I'm guessing you won't get much choice though

Jeeves looks great, and looks like he dressed especially for refereeing the snooker!

Someone might be missing him, so well done on the 'finding the owner' efforts. If not, I hope you and he have a long happy life together.

<and please please can we have no 'I think cats are vermin' replies for a change!>

The kids think his bib and tucker make him look like a Jeeves. He even has spats on his hind paws, but only two white toes on his front nearside.

He's obviously used to people and other animals though. He was wary of the dog at first, retreating to the top of the kitchen units, but after a 2 minute mexican standoff he relaxed and came down to a lower level.

He's perfectly at ease with the kids too.

I have a feeling if he isn't claimed, even Mrs C will soften enough and let him stay.

He's quite a poser. I expect he fell asleep in a warm car; we think that's how our cat became a stray.
