Interesting idea. I wish some farmer would contract out this work to me, for not growing pineapples, for example.

Hardly an over production of pineapples in this country

Good idea that would never take off, as moving from the stick to the carrott doesn't seem to be an idea.
Although if they could then tax the carbon offset payments, they might consider it.

That would be nice!.. I might add that to my "when I rule the world" manifesto... I might have to drop something else though to fit it in - it's already getting quite long...

Start a new thread on this. I have a stupidly long list.

I used to get 40p per mile for car use where there was no public-transport alternative, 27p per mile where there was and 15p a mile for using my bicycle.

That wasn't for commuting, but for business travel. As I rode between Departments in London, I could crank up a decent mileage.

I used to work in London, and cycle around the various offices. When I realised that the other engineers were claiming mileage for using personal transport and claiming the parking fees I enquired about claiming mileage for cycling to which I was laughed at. My leaving comment was "How much are the other costing you?"

The system changed after that. You cannot claim unless it's over X distance of carrying Company kit. And parking wasn't covered... And I got 10p per mile. It was great in the good weather.

I get paid £1 for cycling into work, makes it nice to buy new bibs, tri-suits and stuff with works money

Really. How's that work then?

I get to 'finish' work a few minutes before t'others, so that I don't hold up the boss when they lock up....that's about it. It makes sense to get some kind of incentive. After all, we cyclist commuters are fitter (generally) than those who come by car, and therefor less likely to throw a sickie.

I get paid for cycling daily: in antagonism, resentment, prejudice, and similar currencies . I wish Australia wasn't such a car-dominated country. I really enjoy cycling and always have, but a large proportion of the general public, plus our main media organisations, are definitely anti-cycling. Of course, accusing our media organisations of such prejudice is one thing, making the accusation stick is another.

Agree on the comment re: sickies, by the way: I haven't had a sick day off work for almost 4 years now, and I wish my employer would realise how productive my cycling has made me.

lovely idea.... i will add it to my mental list ...a fiver a day for my commute would go down nicely in the Paulw household......however by the time any scheme has been set up it (along with all those wanting a piece of the "running costs") it would cost another £15 on top........

The only carbon offset I get is my fat arse on my over specced bike.

Whilst I dont get paid to cycle to work, I get paid to cycle at work

Love the freedom it gives me and when the public are giving me grief, I just head for a nice cycle track and chill out for a bit. All paid for by my employer

Well as well as the cycle scheme they are implementing they have a travel scheme so they pay you a token each time you cycle or walk in. You can then use those tokens to pay for dinner / coffee in our on site costa or use it to buy stuff for walking or cycling or use them for vouchers for certain high street retailers.

I totally agree, you'd assume the initial cycle to work, was sort of 'paid to cycle' but it seemed to end up 'how to get a nice bike, but without any need to actually cycle'... God knows how it'd get sorted, but you'd have thought it would save a fortune encouraging people to cycle!

bah, I'm still annoyed that it's a taxable benefit a subsidised ( ie, i only pay 10 quid) gym membership,, it now isn't any cheaper than paying myself... you'd have thought as long as people actually went, it should be taken from your tax code!!
