Obviously you need to know where you are going whatever you use, so a bit of applied logic is also useful.
 
There is basically nothing on any of the usual websites for Teesside of any decent length.

I am sure Cleveland Wheelers or Stockton Wheelers have a page with routes on.

Or just one of the many sites with OS maps, like streetmap.co.uk which enable you to browse OS maps, go exploring. Then create your own route using ridewithgps / strava / gpxeditor / mapmyride etc etc

This doesn't need batteries and you'll get years of enjoyment out of it. What's really brilliant is that you can see the entire area spread out and even write notes on it or highlight routes. It can be dropped on the floor without fear of damage and it fits in a jersey pocket and costs just a few pounds:
