John Unger and his 19-year-old dog Schoep from Bayfield, Wisconsin have stolen many hearts with one photograph taken by Hannah Hudson. John rescued Schoep when he was just 8 weeks old and the two have been best friends since. Schoep now suffers from severe arthritis in his legs and it hurts so bad that Schoep cannot sleep, but John has figured out a way to ease his best friend’s pain. John takes Schoep to the waters of Lake Superior and holds him until he falls asleep, sometimes the two stay in the water for hours. Hannah Hudson snapped a picture of the two and after sharing the picture on Facebook it has been liked over 300,000 times and shared more than 200,000 times. Since the image went viral John has received enough donations to treat Schoeps arthritis. Up to date information on Schoep’s surgery is available on the Bay Area Animal Hospital’s website and on this Facebook page dedicated to John and Schoep.

Good Sunday Evening -

We hope that you've had a wonderful weekend. Ours, just great. The humidity has returned. Yesterday was hard on the old boy, today a bit better, but still hard on him. We just returned from a swim and even though it's hot and humid and the water has been warm, today cold as ice! could only go in to the knees, just deep enough for Schoep to relax and get his core temp down. He's now sleeping and may stay that way the rest of the night. Tomorrow a day off, time to catch-up with all things Schoep and John, a good nights sleep is in order, and I'm almost there. So with that I'll wish a good night to you and yours, we'll see you tomorrow - John

A fantastic day we had. Up early to walk and go to the beach, eat, nap, go shopping, eat, laundry, go to the beach, eat, nap and one more walk. All without the humidity, thats what made it fantastic - especially for Schoep! (pic) Schoep falling asleep in the sunshine. Have a great night - John

Good Sunday Evening -

Some might say that he was being selfish keeping his beloved dog alive while in such pain,but it seems the poor fellow just couldn't let him go! Schoep must have had a wonderful life,take comfort from that.

Sheesh it's just a modern version of Androcles and the Lion, an alternative contemporary version is below:

A man was on holiday in Kenya. While he was walking through the bush, he came across an elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed so the man approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee and inspected the elephant's foot. There was a large thorn deeply embedded in the bottom of the foot.

As carefully and as gently as he could he removed the thorn and the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to face the man and, with a rather stern look on its face, stared at him. For a good ten minutes the man stood frozen - thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away.

For years after, the man remembered the elephant and the events of that day.

One day the man was walking through the zoo with his son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to where they were standing at the rail. It stared at him and the man couldn't help wondering if this was the same elephant.

After a while it trumpeted loudly; then it continued to stare at him. The man summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder.

Suddenly the elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of the man's legs and swung him wildly back and forth along the railing, killing him.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.
