not even out the back or a corner of the car park?

mig welding is really not dangerous, the shape of the lectern would actually stop any sparks from getting anywhere
the sparks are fairly cool by the time they hit anything anyways.

The actual welding is the easy part.

Repairing the heat damage to the finish is more difficult as the silver paint will most likely be metalic and lacquered so matching it and having a seamless and invisible join is the harder part. There could easily be a day's work there, spread over a couple of days maybe, whether it is patch repair or a complete respray of the lectern.

The welding, on the other hand, will be about 30mins to and hour to set up and do. I'd wrap it all in wet towels and cardboard to reduce the heat damage and spatter. That takes longer then the welding. Collection and delivery takes longer then the welding!

I can only do the welding part so if I can't get my friend to spray it then I'm not much use for the job.

I take it that it is only a bit of painted mild steel and not brushed stainless steel or aluminium.

Why did it break in the first place?

hmmm... OK, lif your friend can spray then let me know total price.. If not economical to repair I'll have to source a replacement..

Not sure how it broke - probably dropped on the floor at an angle while being moved I'd imagine... Think it's just mild steel.

OK, just trying to pin him down to a price as it will be mostly his job really, I'll just do the welding on it.

Cheers for that, if there are any further problems with it let me know. The seams on it don't even look like they were originally welded, the paint seemed stronger! Could have been low penetration laser welded or no penetration and then all the weld bead ground off.

Maybe a wooden one, in oak, would be nicer in the long run. I can make them, now that I have jacked in the teaching.;)
