Yeltsin I was going to wait a couple of month when I had the money but I may borrow now so I can get one sooner . I eventually want to get a road bike maybe this time next year. So something I'm the region of 300 quid . Will be used mainly on roads but light off road tracks too railway cycle route tjat type of track stuff. Oh and also to be used on a turbo trainer so needs to be QR rear too.
I think there's a few bikes in that range the carerra subway usually gets good reviews here, IMO stick away from suspension (its just an unnecessary extra weight), another option is to go second hand and get more for your money, good luck.

Second hand boardman cx for a strapping lad would be the best however the budget has put that one out of the race!

yes....... as orignal plan was to buy it in a couple of month time, i need it pretty much this month so budget has taken a slight tumble, although the other option is to buy a cheap £150 (half price) tesco road bike to keep me on the cross trainer for now and then have a blow out later in the year ???

Oh and can't state enough these options will only be a stand in

If you can break your cranks with your previous bike you would likely do the same with one of them.

What was the broken bike?

I broke the rear axle on my old MTB trying to drag my 19 stone up a short sharp hill out of the saddle in way too high a gear - I guess too much torque, thankfully i was only doing about 5mph at the time. That said my hybrid has taken an insane amount of punishement in that department and been absolutely fine.

Id probably be looking for a decent 700c hybrid in a sale, which would compliment a future purchase of a road bike and will do the job fine until you save for a nice road bike, if thats what you were after.

Maybe something like http://www.evanscycles.com/products/trek/71-fx-2011-hybrid-bike-ec025531#features
