I want to give a credit to the excellent rides done by a friend over the weekend.

A while ago he said he'd like to go Coast to Coast in two days, I said I'd go along for the beer.
It turns out that what he meant was that he wanted to ride Coast to Coast to Coast in two days.

I thought this was maybe a bit much for him but didn't say so, I explained that it wouldn't be easy and then set about encouraging him and giving tips for kit and preparation.

We left Eric Morecambe in Morecambe at 7.30 on friday morning and set off into a fair headwind in the sunshine for Scarborough. We had rain in parts and no let up with the headwind but we got to a cold wet and foggy Scarborough in under 12 hours. Chapeau mate, well done I thought.

I left it to him to decide how he was feeling the next day and what he wanted to do. Thirsk, he said, I'll get the train from Thirsk.

We got to Thirsk and after a huge chunk of pig* he wanted to carry on, and we did, arriving back at Eric in around 11 hours after 4 punctures between us.

In summary, he put me to shame with my fancy ways and showed true grit and determination to finish the ride. He was riding a slicked up mountain bike with front suspension and flat pedals and proved that it's not what you've got, it's the way that you do it.

From never having ridden more than about 80k he did back to back 200's.

Well done mate, one of the best rides I've done this year. Thankyou

Sorry this is a bit long but I wanted to give him the respect I think he deserves.

*the most unusual mid ride snack I've ever seen - a big chunk of pork from the hot meat counter at a supermarket.

BTW - I love Sutton Bank  and we rode past so many other hills of note, Buttertubs, Rosedale, Boltby, Fleet Moss etc etc I'm planning how I can get up that way with my climbing bike soon.

I've done that during a long dog walk . Shared it with the dog though, she was ever so happy.

Makes you realize some people are naturally more capable than others will ever be even with practise (like me for instance): Great effort.

thanx Longers! It was basically co-codomol that got me to Thirsk on day 2 as my knee had flared up unbelievably, it was the pig that got me through to Morecambe though.
Next year we do it all again, but from Morecambe to Scotch-land....unless of course he fancies island hopping & single malt tasting??

My bike is a Trek 3700, with 1.5 road slicks on, I didn't think it was so bad...but may have to invest in something a little more fit for purpose next year...happy days!!

chapeau lowride. i'd just get a clipless pedal system and change the front fork for a non-suspension one and you'll have a bike perfect for high milage touring.
