I had probably done another 200 before I got the Garmin, so have done a few miles.

I am interested jimboalee, to hear more about your demonstration?

I love stats as well, a Garmin is great! I wouldn't get anywhere near that speed going into Manchester I find cars and lights get in the way.

I think I got lucky with the traffic and lights this morning, but I will take it. I find that my ride in Manchester is fine until it hits 8am, then the traffic gets busy and things slow down.

Leaving Manchester in the evening can get quite bad, especially when the school run is on.

I have a route to Dunham Massey plotted in to the Garmin (about 10 miles from home) that I am going to try over the holidays. Its only way points so we will see how I get on...

It is lovely round Dunham Massey, I ride out there with a friend sometimes. I use my garmin with no problems, but I use the course feature on a forerunner as oppose to waypoints so it might be different.

Yes, I have the course set up, it looks to be quite simple. I have just marked all the main turns as points.

Just waiting for a nice (not torrential rain) day, not that frequent in Manchester at the moment.

I regularly do a 21 mile circuit (including today) and cannot get much over 14 mph average speed.
Felt really good today and thought that I was certain to average over 15. When I finished and checked my computer it was 14.1:sad:.

Does anyone have any tips for improving my speed?

If a light turns red just just as you are approaching slow right down but dont stop, just coast up to the light then when the light turns to green you are already clipped in, on the saddle etc ready to power away. Also if u know the sequence of the light or even if you don't I always tend to sprint to traffic lights when they are on green so that I dont have to stop.

Do you have any hills pes ?
I power up them, then 'recover' by pedalling steady once over the top for a minute or so. You lose a lot of momentum and speed on hills...and therefor time. This way, you keep the speed up. It's a killer at first...but it worked for me.

Back in the early 90's I decided to have a go at triathlons, having spent the 80's doing a lot of running. So I got my first bike since I was a teenager. I remember one of the experienced cyclists in the office telling me I'd do well to manage 15 mph. It was one of my finest moments to tell him a couple of years later that I managed the 20.3 miles from work in Greenock to home in Paisley in 1 hour and 22 seconds, breaking the 20mph average for the first (and only) time.

I can just about manage the 15mph average nowadays - on a good day ;)

I just started cycling again earlier this year from zero fitness and at the moment I can only manage 12.7mph av over 12 miles max
15mph av over 21 miles sounds pretty good to me ;)

well done

I am lucky in that I commute one way from west to east. I typically have either no wind or a tail wind, it is unusual to get a head wind. In addition, 11 miles of my 17 miles are on rural roads. My average speed ranges from 28 - 34 kph (17-21 mph). I have a few smallish hills and one longish drag.
