I was grinding up a not particularly steep hill on my Cannondale MTB when I noticed an older rider on a tourer come up from behind.

He remained about 10 yards behind, before easing past me as I recovered - still going no faster than walking pace - on the flat bit at the top.

As he passed, he remarked; "'That's a canny steep bank, isn't it?"

I replied in the affirmative, in between wheezes.

Two things occurred to me.

He could easily have scalped me on the climb, but chose not to.

His remark at the top was hardly true, but was aimed solely at encouraging a fellow cyclist.

What a nice guy.

Talking about nice people. I'm riding home one night this week and I come across two cyclists stopped, one bike upside down.

So I stopped to see if I could help, one of them asks if I have a chain tool. Unfortunately I don't so couldn't help. I wasn't the nice guy, the bloke who asked the question was. The other bloke had snapped his chain and the first fella wanted to give him his own chain!

Well why didn't you then give your chain to the bloke who gave his chain to the bloke with the broken chain then the bloke with the broken chain that now had the full chain could have given the 2nd bloke the full chain as he now didn't have a chain then the 2nd bloke who now had a full chain could have given you the full chain as you now didn't have a chain.
Then everyone would have a full chain.

If I had had a chain tool with me I would have also had a link, so the first chain could have just been repaired.

Also I think they had cassettes with different number of cogs, so the chances of the chain being swapable would have been slim, but I thought it was an amazing gesture by the bloke.

I don't think that would have got his bike going again though, intestines on the other hand.......

Only if it was a belt drive...
