Ouch!

That's making me nervous now, considering some of the 50-55 mph descents I do around here ...

I was once doing a fast descent of the A6033 into Hebden Bridge with a bus in close pursuit. (Too close!) I suddenly had a very rapid front tyre deflation and the bike was twitching all over the place as I wrestled it to a stop just using the back brake. The bus pulled up just a couple of feet behind me!

If you click on the video to take you to YouTube, it is discussed in the comments there (including the usual abuse). The guy got some stick, and tries to explain himself.

He admits that he was going too fast for his skill level/comfort zone, and had already locked his back wheel earlier braking when he shouldn't have which probably trashed his tyre and led to the blowout. He reckons he couldn't stop after the first 'save' before the final crash.

I couldn't quite make out what the cameraman was shouting but you can see that the first guy was braking because the gap between them closed a couple of times. I think I saw the back wheel twitch a couple of times before the 'save' which would be the wheel locking up.

I did a 'save' like that coming down the steep local Heptonstall Road once. The traffic lights have a very short cycle in that direction and only let one car through ahead of me before immediately changing back to red. I thought I had time to get through so I was sprinting downhill but then had to emergency brake on what was a greasy damp road. I still don't know how I stayed upright. I stopped about 3 feet beyond the stop line and almost into the cross traffic ...

Wouldn't it have been safer for you just to go through the red light.

The cross traffic was already moving by the time I got there!

I was shocked at how quickly the lights changed. I'd really got some speed up and skidded a long way down the hill.

The busy A646 passes at the bottom of the hill (Streetview link) and I now realise that the lights are set to give maximum priority to the traffic on that.

Anyway, I won't make those two mistakes again! (Assuming that lights won't change, and speeding on a steep, slippery descent.)

Other might say I saved worse but the one which was the biggest brown trouser moment for me was on the flat. I was semi drafting a car (ff I wasn't fully drafting), when they slammed on their brakes. A second later I found out why; the road was covered in diesel!

I know the road. I've gone up & down it often enough. Also the short space of time given to traffic on that road is minimal.

I've gone through the same lights on red with a car following behind, so stopping wasn't an option.

Why didn't he stop after the first wobble?
The first 'wobble' at 0:57 I think he's told to slow down by then it's too late to do anything & gets a bit of a slide going. He then straightens up the bike before sorting out his road position, we're now at 1:00. So he's now stable on the bike & now going into the left hander, no time to brake just keep it smooth & fluid into the left hander & all will be well. Or it would have been had the tyre not let go, you hear it at 1:02 as a snap/cracking sound, the bike breaks away again he almost gets it together before another slide which sees him off. Hardly any time to actually brake.
