What are the disadvantages in riding a frame that is too big?

It was probably fixed wheel. I certainly hope it was anyway!. Alternatively it may have had a coaster (back-pedal) brake in the rear hub- no cables or levers for that.

With fixed there's no freewheel so you brake by resisting the motion of the pedals. Most people run them with a front brake though.

Now, that is something that would interest me..... as I child I used to ride a bike like that...... I definitely would like to find out more about that.
