If you're looking for a cheap, reliable bike for commuting there are any number of hybrids / road bikes around £500 that will do a great job for you.

In my opinion, £1000 bikes tend to have fairly high quality parts that are designed to save weight and work well, but not necessarily to last for a long time and they will need more regular maintenance than a 'cheap' bike. Carbon frames will not stand up well to rough treatment (e.g being bashed against bike stands).

A couple of bikes to consider, but many more are out there:

Decent enough, lesser British brand. Post the spec or at least a link to the spec, not just a picture. Do the work for us ;)

Try and decide for yourself. Won't get a bad bike in the £500-1000 range. You'll get better (but not necessarily harder wearing) components the more you spend, look for a reduced older model for bang for buck

Well I have free servicing with it, which is great. Any things I should be doing with bike or don't do certain things

Lock it with a good lock. Wipe the chain and lube if needed at the end of each day (it'll be easier than trying to lift 5 inches of gunk months later). Learn how to fix a puncture. Or carry enough cash to get a cab to take you home/to the bike shop if you can't be bothered
