Hmmm. My understanding of weight loss when hot was that it was all in the loss of fluid....

I guess there must be some energy expended in opening pores, but I'd have thought there was more energy used to shiver, erect hair, chatter teeth etc.

If it is really cold at work then, by not wrapping up, your body will shiver to maintain temperature at extremities prior to cutting off blood supply to maintain core temperature.
In reality you wrap up warm and eat more to provide energy for your body to burn to keep warm.

Unless you are so cold that you are unable to perform at work, and H&S would have a thing to say about that, being in a very cold workplace would only serve to increase you energy consumption.

Back in the 60's when the miniskirt was all the rage womens legs became fatter to ward off the cold. So in theory, being in a freezing cold workplace could make you fatter as you get cravings for raw seal blubber for lunch.

You know, I don't know. I thought it was the cold.

I'd taken Arch's line of thinking and had always assumed you burn more calories in the cold as your body tries to keep warm. Similarly, that hot weather caused sweat but not the same level of calorie burn.

But, as I think about it, I have no idea why I think that.

The other aspect is that in the warm the body wants to be thinner as it increases the surface area to volume ratio to improve heat loss. In the cold the body wants to be fatter to decrease the surface area to volume ratio to decrease heat loss.

Do you burn any significant number of calories if you stand one of those vibrating treadmills? The one I'm referring to just shakes you from side to side while you stand on it. Can't be much good for you, I imagine.
