What careers advice did you get at school, and did you follow it ?

I went to a grammar school and the only advice I remember was go to university and get a degree as you will earn more if you have a degree. Now, I really should have thought it through a little more and considered doing a subject which would be useful but I liked history and politics and thats what I did. Graduated 20 years ago this summer and cant think of a single time in that period when my degree has been used.
The strange thing is 20 years later I am doing another degree which I have no intention of using for my career and has little or no relevance to my current job. Im just studying because I can and want to.

so they gotta work really hard like every other Joe to accumulate their dough. So they know no more than most other Joe's about the accumulation of wealth.

I'm reminded of a time management course I once attended. In setting the scene the tutor told us the story of one of his successful alumni, a financial advisor who by using the techniques he was about to teach us had managed to reduce their working week to 4 days and still maintain their £100k income. And that was 20 years ago.

I do recall most the teachers saying I was a waste of space and would never acheive anything.

That's disappointing, I was imagining him walking around with a whole pig tucked under each arm and getting told off for it.

As a spotty teenager I used to do a lot of camping and hiking. At my careers interview I said I was interested in getting involved in designing, testing and manufacturing kit. The Careers Adviser suggested keeping a "hobby" as a hobby and recommended a career in the coal mines. I did that for fourteen years, working underground for seven of them and when the mines started closing, began the seamless transition to a career at the pointy end of commercial aviation, like you do.

I guess the careers bloke had a point but if anyone asked me for advice I wouldn't persuade them away from something they were interested in.

If he lived near a forest and the questions were slightly weighted, it is perfectly possible.
e.g. Do you want to stay at home? yes/no/don't know
Do you want to earn decent money?
Do you like checked shirts?
Are you built like Drago?
Is deforestation an issue with you?
