What commuter tyres do you use?

Gators, although I have had 2 punctures on the rear in the last 1500 miles, both in the rain, but they were great over the winter overall.

I don't think I would switch to any other tyre now

I had Specialized Mondo's on my new Allez, a revalation, but 3 punctures in 400 miles ? no thanks, had some Vittoria Rubino Pros spare, stuck one on the rear to see what its like, otherwise its buying Gatorskins or Marathons.

Would be interesting to have a puncture frequency chart, with factors logged like,

Rider Weight
Date
Weather
Tyre Brand
Tube Type
Bike
surface
Puncture description
Which Wheel

Etc Etc, this could give an idea of how to avoid punctures.

I had none over the winter on the Hybrid, 28 MM types, a Conbti Sport on the Front and a Bontrager hard case on the back, both with Slime brand tubes.

why are people so terrified of flats anyway? any modern tyre with a belt will be pretty reliable, carry a tube and a decent pump and it's ten or fifteen minutes to sort out if it does happen

the people grumbling about removing and replacng a tyre seem to be the ones using tyres that they're chosen for flat protection over all other qualities you might chose a tyre for

My main concern is getting one on the way home at 10.30pm at night going through some dodgy part of town, enough scallies about at that time to cause problems.
I know you'll never completely cut them out(hackers not included) but if I can minimize it then that's all I want,if that means getting home 2 minutes later then so be it.

I am happy to change a flat a couple of times a year, comes with the territory but once or twice a week is a pain.

Aye. After 8 flats in the rain during October and November I went for the overkill with M+. Slower maybe but at least I'm home happy rather than being miserable changing a tyre in the dark. ;)

Vittoria Rubino Pro's = 1 puncture in 1400 miles (staple in the tyre, not many tyres would have survived that,)

Thats good to hear, will see how it goes on the back, rarely get a puncture on the front, perhaps 1 in 8 or 10.

I had gatorskins with the bike as new on the Condor chap's recomendation, 'bomb proof' he said

Hated tham, they flatted too much, cut up terrible and were alarming when cornering in the wet, I nearly lost the rear twice on fairly dull sweeping turns in the wet, so bad that I ditched them after a couple of weeks

that so many like them proves to me that tyre performace varies wildly between riders, bikes, routes etc etc

I had 4 punctures in 1 week on the tyres the LBS said were pu***ture resistant !!.Interesting what you said about gator skins as i just splashed the cash and got a pair so i will see how they go ,i have not tried them in the wet yet but seemed ok to me.

On the subway i use city jets and i am happy with them as i have had 2 pu***ers in maybe 4000 miles on them .

Another vote for Bontrager Hardcase Lites, I much prefer them to Luganos and Gator Skins.

I too ditched the gators after only 150 miles, might put one of them on the front when the M+ wears out if funds are tight, otherwise they'll be in the 'for sale' section soon.
