Currently reading "Obsessive Compulsive Cycling Disorder" by Dave Barter (quite a good read so far, only a few chapters in though). He uses the word 'jey' a couple of times. I googled it, and can only find it on cycling sites (singletrackworld and bike(boooo)radar)... is it a way of avoiding the word 'gay' ?
Genuine question, I'm intrigued, as I'd never seen the word before.

In what context did you find the word?

I've found a suggestion that it's a contraction of jersey.

I was a regular on Singletrack when 'jey' started to be used. It was a play on 'gay' and meant a bit effeminate, usually used in a good natured mickey taking context.

Ok - one back at Fnaar. When I was growing up in the '80s as the only Southerner in all of Northumberland, the proper local kids would use the word cat', or even 'muckle cat' for 'rubbish' or 'crap' - often heard "'Toon were f***** cat, man". I can't find a reference anywhere though. Unlike 'jey', I think 'cat' is canny.

Similar variation found in Yorkshire, meaning exactly the same thing.
