What excuses will be used to increase electric car tax?

It’s easy, they purchase a vignette on the ferry, they still pay the tolls in France, and everywhere else that has toll roads, why get away with it here

Because it gives an extra bit of anti-foreigner news for the Daily Mail et c, if they want to stoke up Xenophobia...

Yes, I am incredibly cynical on these things...

Of course, in a few weeks these trucks will cease to damage British roads.

Live and let live: car drivers should no more be taxed further on their vehicles than we should pay anything on our cycles.

some people have to travel for their job, some a heck of a lot, & leave from home to go all over the UK
This is true, but if the cost of travel was raised then employers would soon find ways of reducing the mileage of employees who were required to drive "a heck of a lot". The ridiculously low cost of motorised travel on our roads is what has led to the present problems of pollution and congestion.

Cars are a good thing and they are the only convenient mean of transport for families as public transport in the UK is a joke and well overpriced..
Is public transport really overpriced or does it just appear that way when compared with private transport which is heavily subsidised?
Much of this subsidy coming from the tax bill of people who are reliant on public transport because they cannot afford to buy a car.

Reason 5, space.

No matter how green you make a car and even if it required no fuel at all, it would still take up space. This is the basic problem we have in the UK, too many cars in a finite space. The Tories copied the US car-centric transport model, privatised public transport & didn't bother investing much in alternatives. Almost 40 years down the line - mass congestion.

Just compare the cost of public transport in the EU and the UK and you will see what I mean.

The problem with this is that we end up subsidising car ownership.

Also, if cycles had a dedicated and expensively maintained purpose built road network to use, in some cases exclusively built for them, then there may be an argument in favour of cyclists paying. As it is the road network is designed for cars, and sometimes other users can travel along it too. We all pay for car use and some get the benefit.

I often think that de-restricted electric bikes (or maybe a limit of 1000w) would solve a lot of issues. Less local pollution, less congestion, ability to do a hilly commute at a steady 15mph without needing a shower at the end. But no, they're still "dangerous". But 16 year olds are allowed to buzz around at 28mph on a scooter with just a days basic training.
