The Substance, on iPlayer. Demi Moore as an ageing babe who comes to regret making a deal with the devil. Blimey. Sort of holds it together for the first hour or so, then goes completely to pieces. And not in a good way. How did this manage to get 7.4 on IMDb? Couldn't but bring to mind one of 'the' television ambushes - Dennis Pennis's "Are there any circumstances, if it wasn't gratuitous and it was tastefully done, would you consider keeping your clothes on in a movie?""

Watched last night and totally agree. Goes way OTT, and is very inconsistent with the consequences.
Not just Demi, the entire movie is far too gratuitous. They may be trying to make a point but I have my doubts.

It's satire...

Good Fortune 4/10

With Keanu Reeves in the main role, I was expecting a lot better. No, really.

Awful acting, with robotic delivery from most of the characters.

No wonder it bombed and made a loss at the box office.

The Rob Prydz video? Vaguely I suppose, but there are other more obvious influences.

Vaguely? It seemed like 20% of the film. I was glad that my wife didn't know what I was looking at, and that tells a tale in itself.

Have you ever read the Rob Ager analysis of it? He has got stuff on YouTube too about it. He does a very detailed analysis of the themes and visual symbolism. If even a fraction of it was deliberate by Kubrick then it really shows his utter genius.

there was a Kubrick documentary years back on the Beeb I think, and it showed alot of his archives, and the amount of detail and effort he put into films, well theres a reason he only ever made 13 film. His material that he collated for Napoleon, which he didnt even film in the end is supposedly good enough to be like a valid definitive history of Napoleon source for academia.

so everything in the Shining about the themes, the visual symbolism, its all very deliberate. its an art of movie making I wont say is lost so much as to my knowledge Kubrick is the only one who went that detailed, but its certainly not a style used by the current movie director crop, even the auteurs like Villeneuve or Nolan.
