what gear

I've always as long as I can remember left my bikes with the chain on 1st but the gear leaver pushed round to highest gear so the cable is slack I started doing it as a kid when leveing my bike outside a shop so if anyone tried to ride off with it the chain would jump and make them fall off and I've kept doing it so the cables don't stretch when not on use.
I was wondering dose anyone
Else Do this or do you just leave it in what ever gear you last used.

That would surely be putting sideways pressure on the chain and mech. I am with the other 2 on this.

Cable "stretch" is actually just a term of phrase. What's actually happening is your inner cable is bedding in to your outer cable, whilst the outer cable is bedding into the cable ends and cable stops, so really there's nothing to worry about. Once they've initially bedded in they should be good for the life of the cable.

Of course, old habits die hard!

Ride a fixed gear bike then you don't need to worry about it.

Used to do as the OP when had downtube shifters, but front on the small ring, back on small cog. Cables not under tension and front and rear mech springs not under tension. On the other hand the chain would have been out of line - not so important with a 5 speed block, maybe. It was common advice. Old habits die hard, and I now tend to leave the bike with the chain on the smaller chainring, and somewhere near the middle of the cassette. Don't imagine it makes any difference! Have heard that its a good idea to leave a bike in the highest possible gear when stopping, locking up, as it might delay a thief a little bit.

I tend to leave mine around the middle of the cassette.

Usually finish my training ride on the big ring for the last couple of miles, thanks to a gift descent to get me home, but as soon as I turn into our road, drop onto the inner ring and try and cool down for the last minute. This leaves the bike in the right gear for kicking off on my next ride.

Unless I'm on my SS, then I make sure it's in the bottom gear.

I've never thought of strain on the chain or anything I may have to try and get out that habit lol
