What Have You Fettled Today?

I have identified a significant fettling requirement. Front forks of ageing winter bike have split where the dropout plugin has galvanically corroded.

It is not easy finding a qr disc fork with a straight 1 1/8 steerer, let me tell you. At least not one I'd trust.

Bike not changing gear correctly. Front changer had dropped a bit and its now perfect. Very pleasing.

Took the flat tub off the old Chesini, scowled at it for a bit and then managed to get the tape covering the stitching off. Scowled at it some more before moving on to something else.
Drilled out the broken cable adjusters in the braze ons of a Bob Jackson frame, retapped the threads and they're good to go. Put an old bottom bracket in to check those threads and all is well.
Should probably build it up then.

Respoked the back wheel with a 3 speed sturmey archer hub, added a rear basket, brooks saddle and pedal extenders.

Carbon, I should have said. It's a Ti cross with mudguards and not particularly light as it is. Would also look hilarious with what looks like a 19th century design at the front.

There are loads of full carbon ones on eBay but they are of uncertain providence. Ritchey also does one. Which would be fantastic like everything they make, I am sure, but they are £450. Bontrager sell a straight bladed one, and SJS sell an unbranded one, both with alloy steerers. I've gone with SJS because a do like a shapely curved leg.

Some fettling for our feathered friends

My brother requested this feeding station, so made use of some old decking/fence post etc. He wanted it to be pigeon proof, will have to see on that one. There's an old baking tray inside, easy to take out, should help at cleaning time. Good to upcycle stuff that might otherwise end up on a bonfire

My sister has some big offcuts of plywood left over from a roofing job that she had done when I last visited. I told her to keep them so I could try making some bird boxes for her garden next time that I visit.

Replaced mudguards on the Thorn after one had broken by a branch getting stuck under it. Took me all day! Front wasn’t too bad although I had to deploy a big hacksaw to shorten the stays. Back was a right pain, Thorn have a number of holes that the mudguards screw onto which have to be aligned and drilled. Then the rear dynamo light had to be extracted from the old guard and holes drilled in the new one. Unfortunately they had placed a reflector in the spot I needed and it was mounted on a bracket. That had to be cut off as well. Then the spade connector came off so I replaced both to keep the cable even. That involved shrink wrap and a heat gun! The garage was knee deep in tools. Satisfactorily done in the end though.

this is probably a terrible idea, but i made a headset seal from a bit of old inner tube to keep the grease in and the water/grit out...

Just a wipe down of the chain on my Galaxy, and a wipe down of the frame with a cloth to get some dirt and dust off.

I did attempt to mend an inner tube today. I found some patches, found the hole, first tube of glue was solid. Found another one which when I spread the glue on the tube just rolled in to a ball.
Sacked it off.

The Principia 700 I have on eBay isn't selling, despite lowering the price considerably. So ... I took the tyres off and put a matching pair of Michelin Pro Race 3's on, together with matching the Mavic CPX11 wheelset.

However, the rear on a Mavic CXP11 had a sticky freehub, so that was dismantled, cleaned and re-greased.

If it still won't sell then I'll probably keep this and sell the Woodrup I have.

Progress has also been made on my Ridgeback Platinum upgrade, with cables and a chain plus wider cassette. I'm going to use an American Classic wheelset I have stored so did a tyre swap with the Principia's 26mm ones and put the Michelin tyres from these onto the Principia. Photos once the bar tape is on.
