What Have You Fettled Today?

I have my 100+ km Garforth forum ride coming up on Saturday and had a couple if things to sort out on the bike that I will be riding...

1. It is a rim-braked bike. The brakes had been squealing and I was having to pull the brake levers twice as hard as I should have to. Definitely due to mucky rims, so I scrubbed them.
2. I had been hearing an annoying ticking noise from the bike. These noises can be hard to track down but I was fairly convinced that a bottom bracket bearing was to blame. I stripped the transmission down to investigate. I thought that I could feel a really subtle roughness in one bearing when turning it with a finger. I had 9 spare bearings so I thought the best bet was just to replace the bearings on both sides while I was at it.

I went out on a one hour test ride this evening. The ticking noise had gone and the brakes were quiet and effective.

That's the bike ready for Saturday now. I must remember to check the tyres tomorrow evening, just in case. I don't want to discover that a tyre is flat on Saturday morning just before my train arrives!

Wanted to raise my saddle by about 1 cm.
After the hour and more I'd drilled out a soggy chewed over allen bolt. Fettled two new ones to fit. New, quality, Allen bolts that clamp the saddle post.

Doing this exposed the imminent failure in the saddle mounting.
Another rummage to find a decent post and a saddle fixing that suited saw off another hour.

Height and inclination are still not right and I forgot to reinstall the tracker.

Quite a few hours carrying out a very deep clean of the whole Bike. Including a strip of the chain, derailleur, jockey wheels and crank sprockets. And re-lube of the chain of course…..

Reset the adjusters at the lever and the caliper, pulled both of the brake cables through a bit - to get rid of the stretch - and then adjusted-up both ends for much sharper / less lever-travel stoppage 👍

Cateye AAMP900 front light should last 5+ hours on its lowest 200A constant setting. So for the upcoming Dunwich Dynamo ride: I’ve now also fitted a little Cateye Orb to get me through the early evening - before I switch to the bigger light…..

And on the topic of lights - I’ve also now fitted the very impressive 👍 (Adjustable Lumen) Moon Helix Lite rear. So I’m able to tone it down to something less than ‘Retina Burning’ brightness for the same ride; and for anyone following:

As Mr Numpty here dropped a chain on yesterdays ride to Cromer (not a good idea to change to the inner ring when in big/big ) I've taken the chain and chainrings off to re-do the protective film and check for any damage.

Luckily just a couple of small nicks in the paint and also only taken the top surface off so no bare metal showing; have removed the film and applied new protective film on, will clean chain and chainrings tomorrow and check the chain for wear before lubing..

Also gave the Honjo/SimWorks metal mudguards a once over with AutoSol as they were looking a bit grubby and dull, they have some scratches etc but if you don't want stuff scratched don't use it!

It certainly appears to be ! And all the bracketry / straps etc it came with for £20 was amazing…..
