What Have You Fettled Today?

Last weekend I noticed a gash on my folders back tire, so I ordered a new one and fitted it today. I'm quite impressed I managed to ride for at least a week with it like this!

A very minor fettle tonight. I took my Garmin out front mount off my commute and replaced it with the cycliq version and added the camera adaptor. It fitted the bars exactly without a rubber washer which surprised me. The thinnest rubber washer I had was too big for the clamp to close. So to keep the bars from being scratched, I cut a piece of electrical tape to length and cut it down the middle.

I was a bit dubious that the larger garmin would fit, but it does easily.

Edit 2nd minor fettle. I replaced the scuffed LH name plate on the good bike shifter with the new one I got yesterday.

Last few days have been doing some minor fettling on the Two Stayers.

First was new gear inner (shimano) and some Sim-Works/Nissin outer cables to add a bit of colour and the old ones were pretty much shot.

Also fitted the Magic Components cable tidies (blurred reflective triangle is from Blue Lug via the Woods Cyclery).

Then did the bar tape with new Grepp woven tape again to add a bit of colour.

Old black Grepp tape then went on the All Road as the Brooks tape was getting worn.

Had to do a bit of post ride adjustment to the OG after yesterdays pootle.

Then had a bit of a swear as when I put the bikes back realised that the bar end light on the Fairlight had come out and the tape unravelled so hd to re-do the tape and make sure the end was in tight.

The rear gears on the commuter were being iffy. I started by re-tensioning the cable: this didn't make much difference, so I checked the gear hanger, which was slightly off, so I straightened it. Still no better. Measured chain. Chain was fairly worn. A new chain and the gears worked; I'm now hoping that I caught that before it wore the cassette; so far it seems okay.

Changed the oil in the Rohloff. It’s been an annual September event for 20 years now. Always quite satisfying, I usually do a short 5 mile ride to mix the cleaning oil around and then have a long cup of tea while it drains. That latter was mentioned in one of Thorns early videos and has become a ritual!

Since it’s wet again, I might tackle the cables as a precautionary measure.

Just about enough reach for the original front calipers, with newer pads

The rear not so lucky, so a modern crazy long reach caliper will have to do

With alloy rims instead of the steel originals, front braking should be improved. Rear - not expecting much really, but it'll only get used on the quite road running alongside the local canal, so all's good.
Another alternative would be the 'drop bolt' method, but that would mean sacrificing those nice blingy chromed mudguards

I adjusted the TRP Spyre brakes on a friend's bike; cleaned the discs and then we went for a few miles together to test them.

While riding my friend commented on the constant grumbling from the drivetrain. Turns out the chain is very, very elongated. So the next job is new chain and cassette.

One of my XT SPD's on the commuter has a rounded locking bolt. I've only seen left hand spares, not right hand, and the cost is about £10-£15 if you can get one. It's not a major issue as I can undo it with a 16mm flare nut spanner, rather than a standard 17mm.

It's bugging me as I usually service the pedals once a year (squirt grease into body and push axel back in - old lube is expunged).

Bought a used set of M540's for £13. Stripped both the RH XT and M540, and transferred over the locking bolt. 20 tiny bearings re-greased in each pedal - slightly fiddly when you realise the hex key you were using to push the bearings back into place was actually magnetic, so three bearings would then stick to the hex key.

All fixed, and now I have a spare set of 540's that are nice and smooth, but has a slightly dodgy locking nut. The XT's are now perfect.

OK; it hardly counts as 'Fettling' (no kidding? ) but the new toe straps which had arrived a week or so ago were finally installed on the Orange bike. The more satisfying thing which happened today, however, was when I took two snaps of the bike on location during a short run after the straps were fitted (simply to check buckles' positioning and straps' tightness in the pedal-cage).

Probably of VERY little interest to the vast majority here but one never knows...

Second snap; bike & street signage. The building in the background (No. 1 Oakland Road, Anerley) occupies the land on which the Holdsworth Bike factory once stood and where, back in 1976, this frame was built;

That's it; just a wee nostalgic trip down Memory Lane for Me and my Bike!...... ......

Took new disc pads out and cleaned inside of caliper to try and get rid of mystery noise that had appeared since changing the pads. Seems to have worked.

Holdsworth were sited at No. 1 Oakfield Road (as seen in the sign!) and not Oakland Road as I wrote. Oakland Road - somewhat ironically considering my memory-lapse earlier - is where my GP's surgery is located............

Perhaps I need to make an appointment with someone specialising in dementia?...

Washed and checked the Trek Marlins after finishing our NL tour. OH's is fine, mine needed new rear bike pads and I dismantled one of the Sonder pedals and regressed and tightened it up, hopefully stop the clicking sound.

Cleaned the Ridley X-Bow, waxed it's chain and fiddled three stiff cable housings through the down tube of the Van Rysel NCR AF.
