It was a bit OT. What I really meant was that it's pointless getting irritated by what kind of bikes people ride and how they are set up. There's often a reason for people's choices that the multiple bike-owner with a stable-full of dream machines fit for each purpose can't see. I commuted on an mtb for years, because if you only have one bike and you want to take it over some tricky terrain, even occasionally, it's the obvious choice. My tyres probably looked squishy to roadies and commuters, but then I did a lot of my commute cross-country and had just emerged from the woods. Occasionally I am spotted pedalling a bike that is far too small for me to and from town. It's because I've borrowed it from a tiny friend in order to teach tiny Welsh women to cycle.
