What is the commuting life of a set of road tyres?

On my main commuting bike I have a set of continental gator hardshell which have just completed 7000miles? They are beginning to look a little worn/flat on top, when do I change? Do I wait for them to blow....I bet there's lots of people on this forum who have ridden on a set of road tyres well in access of 7000?

Just wait until they blow on you and then when you get over your injuries buy another set .

Commuting in London, I get about three thousand miles out of Vittoria Rubinos before they start serially puncturing or go bald. It very much depends on the tyre, I think.

This did happen me about 2 years ago on my kinesis road bike it was a Sunday and I had done a nice 40 miles and was some 200 metres from my front door...boom the back tyre shredded....but would you believe it (and this is true!) I live very close to my LBS and the new owner for the first year was open on a Sunday....was able to replace the tyres immediately but of course I can't rely on a tyre blowout taking place at the front door of my LBS...so I think it's time to invest in a new pair of conti's

I tend to get rid when they start puncturing too often.

I am on a set of Vittoria Randoneurs on my commuting bike that must have done 5k plus without any unplanned deflations.

Recently put some durano pluses on my road bike which seem great so far if a little heavy on a road bike.

Tyres arent so expensive I would risk totally shagged out ones or any with deep cuts or bulges.

Any signs of cuts or slits and how far is your commute?

If you think you may need new tyres through the winter months, you might as well get the new one now as the dark winter nights are starting.

That's a heck of a lot of miles...I replaced my tyres recently when they'd done 1500 miles. 7000 is a different ball game altogether...Personally I wouldn't be able to sleep until I had changed my tyres if I was in your shoes.

I’ve done 8000+ miles on my Gatorskins, I have a new pair and will swap them in the next month or two. Excellent tyres, great longevity and puncture resistance but they are now similar to the op’s and looking less round!

You’ve had your money’s worth. 7000 miles isn’t bad for a set of tyres. Time for new ones I think. Just shows how good Continentals are, all my bikes have them.

I ride tyres until they're thin, they've got a bad cut (something requiring a boot to get me home or something I can feel bump as I roll along) or they're puncturing too often. No idea what distances because I don't often log which bike did which ride.

I'd expect more than 1500 miles if spending more than a tenner

I don't really monitor having several bikes. Sometimes I just fancy a change

I got 23,000 out of the front tyres on my Mazda 6 estate which is always fully loaded, they were £42 each fitted (mates rates) makes bike tyre seem expensive per mile.

...mates rates...

There you go, what would retail be? My tyres would be around £100 and I guess I'd get 20k miles or less as I seem quite adept at picking up big nails in the sidewall

Thus 7000 miles out of a £20 tyre isn't bad. And you only need 2 not 4
