What is this box?

It was clipped onto my electric meter but doesn't seem to be connected to anything. Smart meter etc works without it being there. I want to know if the person boxing in the meter can ditch it. Thanks!

It’s an old style meter to read the amount of electric you use. There should be a monitor somewhere it connects to via wireless. I have an “Owl” manufactured one.

Thanks! There's a new digital box installed by the smart meter guy which I assumed was the thing connecting to the monitor. Do you think the clamp meter is redundant, or should I keep it?

The thing in the picture is now redundant. It's functions have been replaced by the smart meter and it's display.

Yes it has a battery compartment. Or at least that's what it looks like - I haven't actually opened it.

The batteries would have powered the wireless to transmit info to the monitor inside the house. I guess the monitor has long gone!
