And that's what is wrong with this sort of thing. 0.7 billion (thank you Google) Europeans are split into small groups (France, Belgium - 11.4 million! - England etc) but 1.4 billion Chinese are just that, Chinese. Let's just assume that 20% of the world's population are homogeneous because that's where the national borders fall.

I suspect there are greater cultural and ethnic differences between north and south of China than between the east and west of Europe.
