With the winter fast approaching and that I’m planning a LEJOG starting late May I’m going to be spending more time than previous years in the garage. My setup has evolved, having tried a Tacx Flow then a basic roller followed by a Suunto Elite roller then last year I bought Keiser M3i spin bike.

Ive used Zwift for a number of years but last year I mixed it up with some free Studio Sweat on demand YouTube classes. The Keiser also has programmes, including ftp tests and interval training.

45 to 60 minutes is my normal duration for a session.

My preference is to be out on the road and unless it’s icy or extreme wind or rain I do still commute on my bike and try for longer weekend rides.

Should I look at other platforms such as Rouvy or give in to my base instincts and pay for online spin classes. What do others do to maintain interest ?

My set up is a bicycle on the road.

If I avoid poor conditions then I lose the opportunity to develop/maintain valuable handling and awareness skills.

In your case that'll be particularly pertinent as you may not get a choice what conditions in which to ride during your odyssey.

Tacx Neo 2T with a big screen TV. I use Zwift and TrainingPeaks Virtual.

I love road riding and do about 6,000 miles p.a. on the roads - but also enjoy indoor stuff especially when the weather is poor and do about 3-4,000 miles p.a. on the turbo.

Currently on a classic dumb trainer with sensors linked to the laptop running mywhoosh ATM
If I manage to sell my latest skip find bike I'm hoping to try and pick up a cheap second hand smart trainer

I have two setups, because… reasons. One is a Tacx Neo 2T, which I mainly use with the Garmin/Tacx Training software, and the other is a Wahoo Kickr V5 which usually gets used with Fulgaz. Each setup has a 50” TV as the screen, which helps with the illusion significantly.

Both work just fine for what I want.

If indoors then

Setup 1 is a Wattbike Atom linked to an Apple TV running Zwift or MyWhoop and outputting to a projector shining onto the opposite wall.

Setup 2 is the Wattbike Atom linked to an iPad Pro and the Wattbike app running interval sessions. I then have the Apple TV showing live TV, or some other streaming service, or an Amazon Echo playing some appropriate music.

You want to be steadily building up the duration of riding if not already. An indoor 2-3 hour session with virtually none stop pedalling is worth a great deal, probably comparable to 5-6 hours outdoors.

The odd high intensity workout to keep things fresh, whether a race or structured HIIT session.

Do whatever platform keeps you interested.

I prefer big participant events either for endurance 2+hours or in races on Zwift.

I use a Tacx Neo2 smart turbo with Zwift, large 65" screen for that immersive experience. I have a rocker board to simulate the sway of outdoor riding, reduces saddle soreness when I do long rides indoors

I used to run a projector on my garage door in my old place when it was just me training. Since moving I've now got a dual setup in a log cabin so my wife and I can train simultaneously but this has meant moving to two small flatscreen displays. We have two Wahoo Kickr's with Climb units, one running apple TV with Zwift and one connected to a PC to run Zwift or SYSTM. I'm really only just getting back in to it but used to switch between Zwift and SYSTM?Sufferfest depending on mood and how much time I had available. Just had aircon fitted which is a game changer  The aircon and fans are all Alexa enabled so we dont have to get off the bikes to turn things on and off

Wahoo KICKR Core with a 10-speed cassette, used with Rouvy running on a Windows laptop to a monitor in front of the bike.

I can also link the KICKR to my Wahoo ELEMNT Bolt, set to indoor mode and use it to ride any route I have in my Wahoo account, which can include turning any ride I have previously recorded into a route. The Bolt then shows the ride on its screen as if riding it and controls the turbo resistance accordingly. Less interactive than Rouvy - although I’ll use the laptop to watch something engaging - but means I can ride routes I am familiar with.

I recently (Last December) took out a Rouvy subscription for me and my partner.
I have a Neo OG, but wanted to be able to use the virtual shifting, and also have the option of using a 'incline replicator' thingy, so ended up with a Kickr Move, which has decent side to side movement which I wasn't prepared to lose, and the back to front I rather like as well, but you can turn that off if you want, at the press of a switch.

I use a fairly old laptop, but have wired ethernet in the garage - I use two fans, once Cleva, one a big floor fan, and the laptop is hooked up to a 22" monitor - I do have a 42" TV I am contemplating trying to fit in there to make it far more immersive, but haven't yet gotten around to it, and it may simply be too large, I suspect something around a 32" would be more viable, which is annoying as I have the 42 just sat around currently.

I do also have a TrainerRoad sub, but haven't been using it that much since finding Rouvy.

I'm considering pausing the Rouvy sub during the summer months, and signing up for My Whoosh so I have that as an option for when I can't get out in the better weather months.
