More than I'd like to admit but it probably isn't an outrageous sum either. I have amassed a lot of bikes but most have re-built using as much of the original as possible so only real cost to them is probably tyres, cables and brake blocks. I did spend a good few hundred on my utility bike with Shimano 8 speed hub gear and dynohub, I put a set of decentish modern 36 spoke wheels (again with front dyno) in my Viscount as I use it for touring and I also paid to have the wheels rebuilt on my Grandad's Rudge with 32/40 spoke NOS Westwood rims which weren't cheap.
The most expensive parts generally have been my love of Brooks saddles and I also seem to have collected a lot of lights and dynamos but I like to be comfortable and I like night riding.
Bikes about £3500, jerseys,jackets about £600, parts about £1000, helmets,shoes, overshoes,gloves about £200, tyres, tubes about £300.lights about £150.
Errr, lots. Bikes, wheels, clothes, vacations, lights, shoes, helmets, gps devices.....Maybe a thousand a year for about 30 years. Jeesh it adds up when you think about it.
I can see about £8,000 worth of bikes in the garage at this moment and of course there are lots of other bits as well, however much it is it is all well spent.
Funnily enough, whilst out on the tandem yesterday Jo said "when do you think this bike will owe us nothing?"
In my reckoning it already owes us nowt. Good times spent together, seeing different stuff and having a good time is worth every penny of a brand new Thorn tandem
The price of the tea and cake for 2 people per stop keeps working out at 7 quid (ish) per go.
