By the look of things we're missing Welsh and a load of E European stuff like Ukranian, Czech, Slovak, Finnish, Bulgarian, Romanian, Hungarian

Gotta be a Welsh speaker on here?

I can just about scrape by in French or Spanish (book a hotel room, order food and drink, buy a train ticket and ask the way to the library - very useful that...) Un plato de huevos fritos might get a bit samey after a while though but at least I wouldn't starve...;)

And for some reason I know various swear words in German, Russian and Italian as well
People who speak Russian can understand Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Belorussian. I had a friend from Ukraine and understood her very well.
I also understand Latvian - it's sister language of Lithuanian and very very similar.
Sounds like we're only missing the weird ones like Finnish and Hungarian then.

I am comfortable with French and can speak broken German to get by. I was once flushed with pride at being able to stop a passing Italian and ask where the Roman arena was in very decent Italian (just about the only whole sentence I could muster). The pride immediately faded when he grabbed me by both shoulders and turned me round 180 degrees and jabbered something to the effect of "there it is mate" back at me.

Dutch is a weird one. Can't understand a word of it when spoken to me, but hand me a menu or show me a notice board and it just falls into place when reading it if you speak English and some German. Managed the basic tourist stuff in Holland last year but that's it..
