Of course there's also an easy answer to the question... a great bike is the one you're riding, right now

that's pretty much the top and bottom of it... assuming one likes the bike they're riding.

I bought a 2nd hand Orange P7 in 2000 and immediately loved everything about it... they way it looks, the way it rides, the indexed gears... i felt like a kid on xmas day. Fourteen years later and still don't want any other bike. But people keep telling me...

"You wanna put suspension forks on that" no i don't (the F7 fork is gorgeous)
"You wanna put skinny slick tyres on that" no i don't (it's an MTB FFS)
"You wanna get a lighter alloy frame" no i don't (steel is real)
"You wanna put disc brakes on that" no i don't (my brakes work fine)
"You really should go clipless." no i shouldn't (pull up power is a bit of a myth)

Why can't people just accept that i like my bike as it is... and hope to still be riding it when I'm a pensioner.

Right on! Hehe, just reading that's made me want to go try riding one - though I'd probably take it straight into the nearest tree if off the road!

Nah, you've just described an Ordinary bike, not a great bike. ;)

Ok, with a carbon frame?

Building your own with a well researched set of components, makes it feel special every time you look at it, never mind ride it. And of course knowing it's probably unique.

It doesn't matter what it's made of. A sweetly handling light bike is a thing of joy.
