What got her there was hard work and years of it.
Simply a career choice, surely?

Because they...

England is in a privileged position with respect to Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
Why is England in a privileged position with respect to Scotland, Ireland and Wales? We live on the same islands and suffer (pretty much) the same weather and geography. We speak (pretty much) the same language and have (Eire apart) the same flag. So I'll ask again; why do we English want Andy Murray, Rory Golfperson, Wales in the Euros or anyone/thing from the British Isles to win yet they just love to hate the English and relish English defeats and setbacks ?

In general, the English like to see the Scots, Irish (both sides) and the Welsh win at all sports/competitions but I've been in public in all those places when an England defeat is positively celebrated. Why is it these people are encouraged to despise the English?

You've made quite a leap there, from celebrating a sporting defeat to actively "despising" a nation.

Perhaps because, with 10x the representation in Parliament, England ALWAYS gets it's own way & the Scots & Welsh just have to suck it up? Like Trident, the imminent privatisation of the NHS (with consequential knock-on effects to the Barnett formula), illegal wars. And then, to cap it all, we have to listen to some Englishman whining about why nobody loves him?

Also, "Rory Golfperson", really? You demonstrate a stunning lack of self-awareness.

How charming you are. I make no bones about disliking the gawf and couldn't be bothered looking his name up but am aware he talks in one if those 'thoysand poynds in Coynty Duyn' accents. 'Stunning lack of self-awareness'! I can't tell you how much I love someone attempting to piss down my neck so he can tell.me it's raining.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Several hundred years of imperial occupation by the English doesn't help England's cause. It's the same reason why people from the North love it when Londoners get their come-uppance, or, I gather, why football fans love to see Chelsea lose.

I think this is partly a reaction to the anglocentric nature of our UK media rather than any dislike of individual English contestants or teams.

the Scots will always want anyone to beat the English

FTFY :okay:.

And the reasons for such an attitude, as asked in several posts? Here are a few:
1966 being wheeled out at every opportunity (and we certainly don't want THAT happening again!).
Wayne Rooney.
Chris Evans.
Your English media's constant demand/insistence that England deserve to win every competition at every sport.

Anyway; if there wasn't ANY kind of tribal rivalry between different countries, there wouldn't be much point in having sporting competitions between them, surely?

Taking the tribal rivalry a step further, using Scotland as an example; there is further rivalry between east and west, north and south.
Within the west there is rivalry between Greenock and Paisley (also Hamilton/Motherwell, Airdrie/Coatbridge and countless others).
Within Greenock there is rivalry between which part of the town you live in, e.g. Gibshill/Strone; and then within those subsets there is rivalry between streets!
People have actually been murdered for wandering into a rival area of town, yet they will stand side by side on a Saturday afternoon supporting the local football team.
