I was just reading the thread on a new set of wheels, and it got me thinking - I have had my road bike for about a year now, and have covered about 2,500 miles. In that time, I've replaced both tyres (and a few inner tubes!) plus brake pads, but apart from that, that's it.

What should I be worried about checking/replacing? Nothing seems to be wrong with anything - but want to avoid leaving stuff until it's literally falling apart! I clean/lube it regularly, so it's being treated well.

Any pointers welcome!

Chain and cassette? Cables? I think it depends on weather, type of riding etc. I'd have the bike serviced if not confident to do

You don't need to change stuff too often.

Chain and cassette are the main ones, and keep an eye on rim wear - you may have a groove in the rim, when this goes, replace the rim.

As per @vickster I would at least get the chain checked as you may be able to get away without replacing the cassette for a while.

For that sort of mileage I'd be checking chain wear. Everything else should be fine, but if the chain is stretched significantly then you may need a new cassette or the new chain won't take to the existing cassette.

In an ideal world you can get at least two chains to a cassette if not 3 if you look after everything well.

Cables? Worth checking replacing those every now and again. (I'm currently deciding whether to stick with black or not and then I'll be changing mine).
