I used different bikes for the commute, and in good weather would MTB to work cross country almost the whole way. 25 and 28 on the main road bikes, comfort just fine because I don't constantly sit like a lump of inert lead on the bum perch.

25s for me as standard now whereas I always used to use 23s. The slight problem with the 25s is you get more debris stuck between them and the bottom of the fork and they are harder to change wheels if you ride a calliper brake especially if you are on the road after a puncture. No noticeable increase in comfort but it is a more stable platform.
