I did a lot of outdoor stuff before it was fashionable. Had, still have, a core of 5 mates who didn't know about risk assessment and so on.
We walked, climbed, bivvied, caved whatever the weather.
Acquiring girls tights, for the thermal benefits of course, helped in the days before Goretex and so on. As young gentlemen we never enquired about anyone's source. But it was assumed that they were not shop bought!
On the other hand, my mother exclaimed when she saw them in my kit. Along the lines of " how did you get those", "you haven't done anything silly?" and on into "you do know where babies come from?"

This was about 60 years ago.

A front wheel cable operated brake which consisted of a block of rubber forcibly pushed down onto the front wheel tyre outer circumference to slow it down.
edit, called a spoon brake or plunger brake.
