So I had just popped to the shop on my bike this morning. Cycling back along a sloth busy road. Some guy in a car overtakes me then instantly takes a left turn in front of me. I slammed the brakes on with not enough time, hit has car and I go flying over it.

I was fine, not hurt at all. But should I report things like that to the police at the incident or just wait until I get home or what?

You make it sound as if it was your fault. It wasn't; it was the driver's fault for cutting in on you. The Highway Code says that drivers should not force other road users to take evasive action. If he knocked you off then drove off without giving his details he broke the law.

Did the driver stop and check that you were alright? Did you get his number and name and address and was there any damage done?
Did he say sorry for cutting you up and causing the crash?
If you feel that his apology was enough then it may not need to go any further, if not then perhaps you may need to Pop along to the police station and ask them.
Were there any witnesses to the accident?

If it were a near miss, then indeed just leave it and move on with your life, but if there's contact you should report it really. In this day and age everybody wants to sue each other. If he finds a scratch on his car later and changes his mind, deciding that you're to blame then you want to make sure your covered really. It probably won't happen, but some people can be incredibly unreasonable especially when a friend/relative/lawyer starts telling him how much it'll cost him to have a crack at getting some money out of you regardless of the circumstances.

If you choose to report it, you can tell the police that you don't wish to take any action at this time. You just fill out a pretty standard form and that'll be the end of it, but at least you'll have something to send back if a solicitors letter drops through the door one day.

I know it's a bit sad you have to consider these things nowadays and that you should be able to take someone on their word, but that's the world we live in....

Edit: and also, if you find later on that actually you might have been ok, but your forks have a massive crack in them and are now unsafe, then you're in a position where you can claim the cost of repair if you need to (without wishing to imply that you should jump on the compensation bandwagon). You'll have difficulty doing that if you haven't reported it.

Cheers for all the advice. We didn't exchange details or anything but I'll remember all this for the next time

Definitely report it. There might have been cctv coverage, we have a lot of it in the uk. He definitely hit you and was at fault, not the other way about. I would think he is really chuffed he didn't have to give details over.

Unfortunately you cannot report it now as you have no details to record (unless there is CCTV), I agree with @Saluki, the driver is probably chuffed at getting away with that. I hope you are not too shaken and as others have said, it was not your fault.

I also hope that the bike is not damaged. If I were you I would take some time to check the forks and wheel to ensure there is nothing that will cause issues later. A cracked rim, bent fork or misaligned bearing can all easily be sorted now but not in the middle of a ride, at the side of the road...in the dark etc.

Also don't be surprised if you develop a few bruises in the days to come...maybe some stiffness or aches.

Hopefully it will never happen again but if it does, take your time to gather information (no matter how awkward it feels at the time).

all the best.

I was reading a post here few weeks ago about a cyclist who has received a letter from a lawyer about an accident which has happened sometimes ago involving a pedestrian.
What I learned from that post is that it is always good to follow the law. Once the lawyers come in to the scene all common sense etc disappear.
Therefore I will report it to the police just for the future references, only to save yourself of trouble in the future.
