What to do with this pigeon?

@Beebo has already mentioned 'Speckled Jim' - I second that fine choice of name.

We also had a stray 20lb turkey show up one morning who we put in with the chickens, they were not impressed! He eventually went to live with a family in Dorset, that's what I was told anyway

Hmmmm....did he go to "live in Dorset" just before Christmas by any chance? That Christmas when you enjoyed a particularly tasty turkey dinner?

I am liking this!
That's what I feel like doing anyway: the other wee birds would miss their food I think, plus of course there are other pigeons, a few jackdaws, and others.
I haven't got a clue about the life of a racing pigeon btw, it sounds hard work.
@annedonnelly I did try to approach it, it flew away.
All the web sites want you to catch it first, to read the tag, before they can take action.

Just thought - if it's fit enough to fly away from you and won't let you catch it then it may just need to rest before finishing its journey on its own. No point in stressing it - and you - chasing it around the garden.

Oh yeah, it's very fit, actually getting fatter, looks a lovely specimen.

Poor Henry, I like to think that he's still running around a field somewhere, he was too big to fit in an oven anyway. Not that we tried of course!!

You must devise a trap, you will need a pencil and paper
Lay a square piece of net on the ground and put weights along one edge to keep that side down. Get a couple of sticks to hold the opposite edge up about half a metre off the ground. Now place some food under the net, when the pigeon walks in for a feed you can pull the strings attached to the sticks, this causes the net to fall down over the pigeon. At this point the bird may panic, but the weight of the net will do no harm and you quickly throw an old coat, or something which will not let the light through, over the bird. Leave the bird to calm down in the darkness for a few minutes before reaching under the net to grab it. It sounds like a biggish bird, so try to grab it with both hands whilst its wings are folded. It is important to not let it flap it's wings or peck you, but by this time you should have got a feel for the bird and be able to hold it in one hand whilst grabbing the paper and pencil with the other in order to record the numbers on the paper with the pencil. After recording the details, don't set it down on the ground but liberate it by holding with both hands and propelling it away from you in an upward and forward motion.
Easy, and cheaper than 'phoning Canada.
