If you had the money and the drive and the talent to make it happen, what would you make a film or TV series on?
If it were me, I'd televise George Gissing's The Netherworld, which is like East Enders in the 1890s, only I'm worried the acid attack might give people ideas.
For a film, I'd make an old fashioned war movie based on the Sherman Firefly. It would be great. The first half would be about Major Brighty and Colonel Witheridge trying to mount an anti aircraft gun on a Sherman tank, being ordered to desist, and getting the order reversed with Churchill's approval. The second half would be in France with German Tiger ace Michael Wittmann running amok in Villiers Bocage, turning down a safe training role, then mounting a desperate mission to forestall the allies trapping thousands of German troops in the Falaise Pocket. The climax would be Wittman and three other Tiger crews getting despatched by Trooper Ekens in his Firefly. Then there'd be a bit more fighting, but the downbeat ending would be Trooper Ekens basically being demoted to radio operator by his jealous CO. Brilliant eh? Better than Dunkirk.
Then again, I might film Issac Azimov's The Gods Themselves. The middle section could be animated, only I'm not keen on CGI. The last section of that book seemed slightly soft porn. It was set on the moon and for leisure they played a form of low gravity basketball in the nude. It could be a classic, but I expect it would lose money.
