I bought a drinkable everyday table Rosso from Italy at Aldi the other day. It cost £3.09. How does the maths work out with that?

Excise duty is £2.00
VAT on the duty is £0.40
(Yep, that is how it works and you do pay VAT on the duty!)

overall VAT on the £3.09 sale price is 51p

ie of the £3.09 you pay, £2.51 is tax paid to HMRC

So all the rest: adds up to 58p

Retail costs
Retailers profit
Wine in the bottle
