When enough people have power meters, you may be able too see who has the best average power over a segment. Would that be a more fair assessment of who is the quickest?

I see where you are coming from but not really. It just tells you who has the best average power.

So long as you are riding a bike then the current method works well enough.

They could do with removing/reducing the %age error from GPS differences. Just remove any segments that take, say, less than a minute would be a start. Then have some "factor" which allows (in the algorithms) for the device you're recording the ride on.

Why remove segments under a minute?

Some of the best sprints around here have a KOM of sub 45 secs. My favourite is about 325 metres, with a genuine KOM of 31 secs.

Because of GPS inaccuracy which differs between devices.
You reckon that it's that bad?

If devices can't lock on during a ride and stick to a relatively accurate signal for 30 secs, how accurate is the whole ride then?

Personally, I am comfortable with my Garnin 520 with Cadence and Speed sensors attached too. Doesn't get much more accurate on the bike.
