All this talk of working Public Holidays, paid days off and days off in lieu only has any relevance if you are contracted or PAYE, if I don't work I don't earn money whatever day it is.
I'm lucky to be able to work this way as it's up to me when and how long I work which is a freedom contracted or PAYE people don't have- there are advantages to both systems. If you haven't got a job, one day is the same as another which must be frustrating.
Days off are precious and not to be frittered away. Bananas or pineaople are nice but not apple...
How right you are, Archie! I choose to work on an as and when required basis, because I was fed up of constant 12 hours a day restaurant shifts.
That means if a 10 hour weekend shift comes up you don't sniff at it, because there might be no shifts next week. The flexibility plus the choice to say no to a shift suits me. In reality, I can rarely afford to say no: I'm going to work the next 5 days, but I just had 4 days off, I'm not complaining if my shifts fall on the bank holidays.
IME it's mostly the 9/5, Mond to Frid folks moaning about having to work on a public holiday. Catering, entertainment, shop workers, nurses, police and similar work them as a matter of fact.

Being self employed I did not take a day off for it as far as I can remember.
